Art and Design

INTENT

It is our intent at St Mary's RCVA Primary School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in art and design which will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

IMPLEMENTATION

Across the school, pupils will be exposed to a broad range of different kinds of arts, craft and design. They should be able to think critically about art and design, including their own. As they progress through each year group, they will develop their techniques and have the opportunity to apply these creatively. Fundamental skills such as drawing, sketching, use of shape and colour and imagination are built upon with each new topic so that pupils feel confident to apply these independently as they move through the school. In art and design lessons, pupils are taught how to design and draw, using research and sketches as aides, use a variety of materials, evaluate their art and build their knowledge.

IMPACT

Our children enjoy the self-expression that they experience in Art and Design.

They are always keen to learn new skills and techniques and work hard to perfect those shown to them.

They experience a range of media and use it confidently to express their ideas

The children's art is cross curricular and helps them express feelings and emotions in art, as well as show their knowledge and understanding in RE, History, Geography and Science.

Through their Art and Design, the children are able to show and describe their skills with the pupil's artwork proudly displayed in and around school.
